Yet Another Weight Loss Show has been canceled. The show debuted in November, 2010 as a sort-of diary of my weight loss efforts. I began at 249 pounds and achieved a low point of 222 pounds. I am now back up at 250 pounds, for a variety of reasons. The show was canceled because really, who wants to listen to a weight loss show in which the host keeps reporting that he’s gaining weight? What I went through over the past 16 months or so may be completely normal – weight fluctuation is extremely common when people attempt to lose a large amount of weight – but just because it’s normal doesn’t mean it makes for a good podcast.

My weight loss efforts, such as they are, will be the subject of a periodic segment on Geek Dads Weekly from this point forward.

This episode is all about turning points. I successfully quit smoking years ago after a long period of minor successes and failures, and much like smoking, quitting eating (so to speak) is a real trial. I know that if I can apply the same principles to one, I can have success with the other, and that’s where I am right now. It’s far easier to resist temptation if you’re not tempted to begin with. I’ve reached a turning point, and even in the time between recording the show and writing these show notes, I’ve proven to myself that I’m on the right track. Moving forward. One day at a time.

I was a little more than 45 minutes late doing this episode live, because I decided not to skip it altogether after all. I was going to skip because I didn’t think I had anything to say this week. Turns out, I did. I had about a half hour’s worth of things to say, apparently!

In addition to the update on my efforts (been back on the bike, been eating better), I also talked about the role that the food industry has in keeping people fat. Specifically, keeping poor people fat. It’s not just poor people and it’s not just the food industry, I know – but there’s a pretty definitive link between how much money a person makes and how much fresh, healthful food they can afford. There’s a reason McDonald’s and no-name cheap grocery stores (where you can’t trust the quality of the meat & produce) thrive in low-income areas, after all. So… yeah. Looks like I had a topic after all. Hope you enjoy it.

While at Affiliate Summit West 2012, I won a fantastic prize from Buy.at – a Polar wrist computer. What? It is a wrist computer! Okay, it’s a heart rate monitor, but it’s a very sophisticated monitor. I ran out of time before my ride to get it set up properly, so I’ll wear it on my next outing, but glancing at the manual it looks easy to use and packed with useful data. Thanks, Buy.at.

After a little time off I’m back with an episode of YAWLS in which I talk about a slight backslide on the scale, tracking my intake and my excellent new bike courtesy of my super-cool new sponsor, JensonUSA.

October wasn’t a stellar month for me, fitness-wise, but I seem to be back on track. The problem, I think, was that I stopped tracking my food intake. I had been using the Livestrong app for my iPhone to track, but fell out of the habit. I’m back on track because in the past week that I’ve started tracking again, I’ve dropped almost two pounds. Apps like this make it super-easy to see exactly what you’re doing and when, which makes it super-easy to determine what things to avoid and when.

Next, I talked about JensonUSA, my great new sponsor. They gave me a bike to ride, and it’s amazing. Way better than the beat-up old mountain bike that I had been riding. In this segment, I explained why and how I got the bike and what I’m doing with it. It’s amazing the things you learn when you’ve got a great bike under you. It’s also amazing what you learn when you put a bike together by yourself for the first time and make adjustments to the fit of it.

Next week – 228!

Thanks for listening!

I really feel like I’ve turned a corner in my weight loss efforts, especially today – Saturday – as I’m posting this. I said on the show Thursday night that I wasn’t sure what my weight was but that it was probably about the same as last week (about 229 or so). I weighed in this morning, just about 36 hours after that recording, and tipped the scale at 228. Thursday morning was very likely 229, as I thought it might have been. Awesome! That means that my analysis of my new metabolism is pretty spot-on, I think. Next week, after a week of great biking and menu choices, I fully expect to be down to 226 or lower.

Thanks for listening!

I weighed in at the same number as last week, which I’ll call a small victory. It beats one alternative – I could have gained. I didn’t have a good week, though, overall.

It was a downer of a week, actually. I’m feeling very, very stressed for a lot of reasons that I won’t into here or on the show. Suffice to say, I’m not in a very happy place in my head at the moment. Oh, it’ll all work out – I’m very confident of that – but that doesn’t make the process any easier. I made some very bad food choices this week, and I haven’t been sleeping well at all. All these stressors added up make for a bummed-out Daniel. It’s a mercifully short episode this time.

Thanks for listening. Next week? Better. It’ll be better.

It was a good week, full of exercise and weight loss. There’s not much more I could ask for. Or is there?

In this episode, recorded late last night, I describe how I’ve been riding my bike in the early evenings more and more over the past few weeks, culminating in 31 miles last week alone. Let’s see if I can do 40 this week. I also tell a story that might make me look like a jerk, but you know you have thoughts like these too, sometimes. We’re only human, after all.

Next week? Two more pounds! Here we go!

Thanks for listening!

I’m sure it will pass. Probably I just need a good night’s sleep or something. More likely, I just need to avoid Facebook and Twitter because there’s a lot of things going on right now that are, frankly, depressing me. The risk of course, is that when I’m feeling down, I start to overeat. But I’m trying, despite how I feel. I’m really trying.

And isn’t that the whole point?

I’m back after an extended time away from the microphone due to family and business travel. It looks like I’m in worse shape than before, but things are not always what they seem.

My last show was on August 4th, exactly 21 days from the recording of this episode. In that time, I went to Idaho Falls for a vacation and family event (a wedding) and to New York City for Affiliate Summit East 2011. Now, I know that in my last episode I reported a weight of 232 pounds. And yes, I see that I typed 237 up there in the title, making it look like I gained five pounds in three weeks – and technically, that’s true. In this episode I go over all the ways I failed to keep from creeping up a little and all the ways I succeeded (big time) in making sure that it wasn’t any worse than that. I cover the trip to Affiliate Summit in detail.

The best thing about this episode isn’t even in the recording, though. The best thing is that (due to time constraints) I’m posting this episode on Saturday night, August 27th, two days after it was recorded. In that time, I’ve already worked off about two pounds. That’s just a lot of junk weight from New York City coming off, but it illustrates the point that eating on the road doesn’t have to be the end of the line for diet/fitness/lifestyle change efforts. I’ve been back on the bike for the past three days since returning home, and have eaten dramatically better, and it’s already paying off.

Follow my biking progress on DailyMile.com, if you’re so inclined.

I welcomed my first guest for this series tonight, Vinny O’Hare. Vinny is a friend of mine in the affiliate marketing industry, and he’s on the right track to shed some pounds and get in better shape.

Vinny is not a fat guy. Like most of us, he’s packing some extra pounds though, and he’s on the same path I am – better fitness, better weight management, healthier lifestyle. Over the course of 40 minutes we covered a wide range of topics from fast food to fad diets, morning shakes and smoothies – even giving up chicken after watching a slaughterhouse video. We talked about exercise – indoor and outdoor – and the importance of water. Also: dealing with caffeine, sugar and late-night ice cream binges.

We’re both on the right track, and I can’t wait to see how it turns out. Will Vinny hit 200 before I do? We might find out in a couple of months. It’s not a race, it’s a journey.

I’m glad you’re here to witness the journey. Thanks for listening, and thanks for coming on the show tonight, Vinny!

As I close in on Affiliate Summit East 2011, I go over a few techniques I’ll be employing to keep myself on the right track while I’m out of town.

This episode was broadcast live. Check out QAQN Live! for show schedules and live chat.

So, right off the bat, yeah, I know according to the title up there, I’m up a pound since last week… and I said on the show that I was down a pound. There’s a perfectly good explanation for that: I didn’t check last week’s number before pressing Record. Okay, more than that, I actually did tip the scale at 235 earlier this week, but I brought it back down to 234 this morning, so when I say I’m down, that’s what I was thinking of. I’m not down since last week, but I halted a short climb. Whew. Podcasting is hard.

Eating out can be difficult when you’re trying to watch your caloric intake. My plan for New York has two parts: eating out and eating in. For eating out, I’m planning on going to the 53rd Street Gourmet Deli, just outside the Hilton on 53rd. Fresh, lean meat and good bread will be the standard order – nothing too fatty, no mayo, maybe a little cheese. A New York deli sandwich, that’s where it’s at. I can do that for most of my meals, I think. I’ve got some other ideas that I go over on the show, too.

For eating in, I’m planning on bringing a few things with me. I’m loving these Cascadian Farms Vanilla Chip Granola Bars for a quick pick me up in the morning. I’m bringing two boxes with me. I’m also bringing some Crystal Light to keep up with my water intake (I’m not a fan of plain water – yet). Things that can be packed easily are the key here.

Thanks for listening!

This has not been a good week. I knew when I woke up this morning that if I stepped on the scale, it would be higher than the last time I checked, but I wasn’t prepared for it to tell me that I’d gained nearly five pounds this week. That’s disheartening, embarrassing and unacceptable. I know why it happened… for the past several weeks, I have had zero willpower over snacks.

If this body project of mine is going to succeed, I need to find that willpower. I need to turn this around before I undo everything that I’ve done so far. I started at 250. Dropped to 222. Now I’m halfway back at 235. Un-freakin’-acceptable.

I have two challenges going on right now, both of which I’m losing. The first is at Road to Thin, where we have decided to see who could drop the most weight as a percentage of starting weight by August 30th. The second challenge was issued by Jared Saunders on episode 17 of Inside Internet Marketing. We’re both going to drop 15 pounds before Affiliate Summit in August. Of course, that’s when I was 230, so now I’ve got 20 to drop instead of 15. Ugh. I think I’ll go to the garage and see how much work my bike needs to be street-worthy.

Part of the QAQN: Rebirth initiative, this episode of Yet Another Weight Loss Show is a great jumping on point for new listeners. Two important things happen with this episode. First, I recap and summarize everything that this show is about to make it accessible to everyone. I give a backstory of my health and body issues and bring everyone up to speed on what I’m doing now in the effort to lose weight and get into better shape.

The second important thing is that this episode was broadcast on Ustream live. It was a test, really. I didn’t announce it, and only invited two people to watch because I’ve never done a live stream and didn’t want a bunch of people watching me screw up the first one – which I did. You’ll hear it. But all in all, I really enjoyed it, and I’m pretty sure I know how to avoid the glitch that plagued me during this episode, so I’ll be streaming the rest of my shows from now on… unless I’m not feeling pretty, in which case I might just stick to audio.

As far as the current weight… yeah, I’m up a bit. My low, which I don’t believe I recorded in an episode, was 222. So I’m up about 8 pounds from my low. I’m not unaware of it though, which means I can fight it. I know what I’m doing wrong… I need to get back to smaller portions and eating less. I’m also gearing up – pun totally intended – for bike riding.

The new goal (since this is a reboot and the “on a mission to drop 50 pounds no longer technically applies) is to lose 30 pounds. Short term, I’m aiming for 15 by the time Affiliate Summit comes up in mid/late August. The other 15, by the end of the year. I’ll have more updates on my progress next week!

It’s been three weeks since the last episode… three weeks and ten pounds! How do I drop more than three pounds per week (average)? Simple!

Illness!

You may recall the last time I dropped a lot of weight fast was back in February when I got sick. Well, I wasn’t sick last week, but I was hospitalized and had surgery to remove my gallbladder, so… same thing. Eight of those ten pounds I lost came just in the past 12 days; I was hospitalized for the first three, and in recovery since.

Listen for the full story, and maybe you too can lose a significant amount of weight simply by removing an organ!

I’ve still got an appendix, I wonder if they’ll take that out, too…

Thanks for listening!

It was a close one this time! This episode breaks my streak of consistent weight loss, but hey, at least I didn’t gain. I call it a near miss because I came in at 234.0 on the scale. Just a tenth of a pound more and I could have reported 233 (yes, I remove the decimal when I report my weight here). So, technically, unless my weight last week was 234.0 (which I don’t know), I’ve at least made some tiny progress… just not a nice, round number.

Also in this episode, treadmill desks! My friends Tricia Meyer and Jen Goode each built their own (Tricia’s – Jen’s) and I’m inspired to follow suit. As we work on buying a house (we’ll be moving in in a month if all goes well with the inspections), I’m looking at where I can put a treadmill desk. I’ve got a few ideas, and you can be sure I’ll report back here about it when it happens!

Thanks for listening!

I’m down sixteen pounds from my max of 250 earlier this year. I’m losing weight pretty steadily (save for that one jumpstart period a few weeks ago) so I’m quite happy with the direction and rate that I’m going.

Here we are on the ninth episode of Yet Another Weight Loss Show, and it’s my third consecutive check-in with a loss. It almost wasn’t – yesterday I weighed in at 236 for our Road to Thin podcast, today I came in at 235. Well, no matter – I’ll take it!

This past week was a little hit-and-miss. I didn’t keep up the rate that I had the week before, only coming down one pound vs. the four the week before. It was enough to put me ahead in the challenge that we had over at Road to Thin, though.

This coming week is all about exercise and incorporating calorie-burning walking into the mix. I feel like I’ve hit a bit of a plateau with my metabolism, and getting the body moving could be exactly what I need to jumpstart it again. Couldn’t hurt, right?

Thanks for listening, see you next weekend!

Fast food is now poisonous to me. Seriously.

The call-in line is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and I would love to hear your thoughts about what I’m doing at any stage of the game. Please feel free to leave a voicemail. The number is 281-826-2112, and if you’ll just tell me your name and where you’re from, that would be very, very appreciated. You can also send an email to feedback@qaqn.com.

Thanks for listening!

I’m back after a two-week absence with a new episode! Why the missed week? Well, it just so happens that I’ve discovered the secret to weight loss, and I simply had to miss last week’s episode in order to show that it really works.

Illness!

That’s right – get sick. Get so sick that you can barely eat anything and you’ll see the inches melt off your waist like nobody’s business. Try it like I did… start with a cold that might have been the flu (minimum of one week), then get a throat infection that actually prevents you from eating (or drinking) for a day or two. After about ten days of this, you’ll be several pounds lighter! And don’t worry about your appetite, you won’t have one during the entire ordeal! It’s a foolproof solution.

So get out there and lick a street sign today. Go shake hands with a little kid. Tongue-kiss a few random strangers, perhaps down by the hospital or the nearest doctor’s office. Get sick today!

All the numbers have been going down so far, which, I have to admit, isn’t really telling the whole story. There was that big gap between episodes 3 and 4, and I know I gained during that time but then lost it between recordings. Still, there is a definite trend here, and I’m feeling more confident – and hydrated – than ever.

Water is the big deal this time, and I described how I’m doing with that. Also, I had a follow-up visit with the doctor last week to talk about the test results from my EGD and what I can do about my new medical problems. He’s got me on a pretty general, yet effective, diet now. I still wish he’d given me a menu to use, but giving me a list of foods to use as a foundation for my own menu is okay, too.

This show is no longer a Saturday night show – it’s simply a weekend show. New episodes will be recorded on Saturdays or Sundays and will be posted every Sunday. That way I can plan for recording when Angela is home from work (almost always one of those two days) and she can watch the kids while I retreat to my pseudo-studio to record.

Thanks for listening, see you next weekend!

Well, today I rambled into the microphone for 17 minutes and called it a show. It stems from a discussion I had with the guys on Road To Thin earlier in the day.

I’m back after missing an episode last week, so you’re getting two for the price of one this time – and who doesn’t love a deal like that?

I’ve got some notes from the show I was going to do last Saturday, and they are these:

I dropped a pound! Scream it from the mountaintops, I dropped a pound!

No, it doesn’t seem like much. No, it’s not as dramatic as the 5 that I lost in one week a while back (the first week that I tried South Beach). It doesn’t seem like a big deal… and it’s not. It’s not a big deal, but it’s a fairly good-sized deal. It’s a healthy amount of weight to lose in a week, and I wasn’t miserable all week denying myself foods that I normally enjoy.

I’m still off the fast food, and I – for the most part – didn’t snack on things that I intended to drop. Last week I said that I was going to cut out things like potato and tortilla chips, certain crackers, and other snacks that aren’t particularly healthy. This week was good as far as that goes, but I did eat some tortilla chips on the side of a taco salad that I made for dinner one night.

And that’s the lesson of the week. You don’t need to completely eliminate foods from your diet. A handful of chips with the meal? Cool. A bag of chips sitting on the couch watching TV? Not cool.

Since last Saturday, things haven’t been so smooth. I caved a few times and hit the drive-thru, though my snacking habits got fairly turned around for the better. I’m still at 248, so at least I didn’t go up, but all in all, it was not a great week.

I examined the differences in my experience with smoking cessation and weight loss, and also mentioned The Great American Detox Diet (written by Alex Jamieson, whose name I couldn’t recall during the recording). So I’m not making huge progress, but holding steady is better than going in the wrong direction.

Starting tomorrow, it’s all about renewing the committment and working out my triggers when it comes to fast food as well as starting on portion control and calorie counting using the Lose It! app for iPhone.

I wrapped the show with Road to Thin, another weight loss project that I’m involved with. It’s definitely worth a look, and we’d love to hear what you think of it.

<itunes:summary>I'm back after missing an episode last week, so you're getting two for the price of one this time - and who doesn't love a deal like that?

I've got some notes from the show I was going to do last Saturday, and they are these:
I dropped a pound! Scream it from the mountaintops, I dropped a pound!

No, it doesn't seem like much. No, it's not as dramatic as the 5 that I lost in one week a while back (the first week that I tried South Beach). It doesn't seem like a big deal... and it's not. It's not a big deal, but it's a fairly good-sized deal. It's a healthy amount of weight to lose in a week, and I wasn't miserable all week denying myself foods that I normally enjoy.

I'm still off the fast food, and I - for the most part - didn't snack on things that I intended to drop. Last week I said that I was going to cut out things like potato and tortilla chips, certain crackers, and other snacks that aren't particularly healthy. This week was good as far as that goes, but I did eat some tortilla chips on the side of a taco salad that I made for dinner one night.

And that's the lesson of the week. You don't need to completely eliminate foods from your diet. A handful of chips with the meal? Cool. A bag of chips sitting on the couch watching TV? Not cool.
Since last Saturday, things haven't been so smooth. I caved a few times and hit the drive-thru, though my snacking habits got fairly turned around for the better. I'm still at 248, so at least I didn't go up, but all in all, it was not a great week.

There was no change in my weight this week, despite a fairly major change in my diet. For the first time in many, many months, I went a week without a bite of fast food. It’s not the first time that I’ve done this – in fact, any time I’ve ever lost any kind of weight it was during a period where I laid off the fast food. I always went back to it eventually. Twice a week for lunch… swing through the drive-thru three times a week for breakfast… but no longer.

I ate responsibly at Thanksgiving. While many people stuff themselves as full of carbs and tryptophan as possible, I actually ate no more than I would at any other meal on any other day. Couple of slices of turkey breast, a bit of dark meat, a little mashed potato and some awesome cauliflower that I made up. I might post the recipe for that later on. That was all. I didn’t go nuts. Well, I did eat a couple of bites of cake afterward – literally, bites. My mom made this cake balls that were really great. They’re about the size of a golf ball and instead of frosting, you dip the ball-shaped cake in white chocolate and let it harden. Kinda like a chocolate covered strawberry, except with cake. I ate two.

Pretty modest for Thanksgiving, right?

So, that was my only life-change this past week. Fast food is officially out. Everything else remained the same. Next week, starting tomorrow, I begin with another piece of the puzzle: changing my snacks at home. Gone will be the white-flour crackers, corn chips and other not-so-great items. After that comes the really hard part – counting calories and changing my meal-time food choices.

What about exercising? I didn’t do any this week aside from a lot of walking around at the zoo on Wednesday. That’s another piece of the puzzle that will be implemented at a specific time.

Also on the podcast: I described how I got into the shape that I’m in.

Lastly, my apologies for the quality of the audio in this episode. It’s not as good as I would like it to be because I had to record in a room of the apartment that isn’t acoustically friendly to podcasting. If I wasn’t on a schedule, I might have put off recording until I could be in my normal location, but alas, it was not to be. Next week will be back to my normally clear audio quality.

This is the inaugural episode of another new QAQN production: Yet Another Weight Loss Show. Isn’t that what the world really needs? Yet another one? Well, here it is!

Being the geek that I am, I get excited about new gadgets and technology. When I first got my iPhone, I installed the Lose It! app, and started tracking what I was eating. I lost 20 pounds doing that. These days, I’ve found my passion for podcasting, and I’m using that as a means to geek out over losing weight and getting into better shape.

This first episode didn’t cover a few things that I had meant to cover. Chalk it up to ill preparation, I suppose – I thought I had everything at the forefront of my mind. But there are points that I want to address here in the show notes to go along with the episode that you are listening (or are about to listen) to. Next week I’ll bullet point the things I want to talk about beforehand.

First, no fad diets. No Atkins, no South Beach, no this, no that. Less food (and better food) and more exercise. That’s the deal.

Second, I’m not doing this for cosmetic reasons. I think I look okay, and I’m losing weight because I have medical reasons to do so. I will detail those reasons on next week’s show, but I wanted to state up front that I’m not doing this [entirely] because of the way I look.

Lastly, the call-in line is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and I would love to hear your thoughts about what I’m doing at any stage of the game. Please feel free to leave a voicemail. The number is 281-826-2112, and if you’ll just tell me your name and where you’re from, that would be very, very appreciated.
