There’s a lot to cover, but surprisingly, it can be summed up in a little list of bullet points.

Gorilla Radio launches

The Hobbit exhausts

Game of Thrones returns

The Walking Dead finishes

The Nerdist disappoints

There ya go. Enjoy – we sure did.

In which Daniel and Greg talk about getting good help, Iron Man 3, the nature of spoilers, and the slowest… week… ever.

In which Daniel and Greg talk about getting good help, Iron Man 3, the nature of spoilers, and the slowest… week… ever.

So, Greg hired a maid service to do a deep cleaning on his house. Apparently, he thinks he’s the Earl of Grantham or something. Hey look, I made a successful Downton Abbey reference!

A recent TV spot for Iron Man 3 showed Pepper Potts in armor. Is this a spoiler? What is the nature of spoilers? How long do you have to wait before talking about something online? Do you need to put SPOILER WARNING on everything? Does popularity of a thing matter?

This is absolutely the slowest week ever… as we lead up to the return of Doctor Who, the season 3 premiere of Game of Thrones, season three end of The Walking Dead and the series premiere of Orphan Black. I’m quite taken by this new show, and I have high hopes for it.

Next week, we’re back to our regular weekly schedule with a full recap and review of all those shows and more.

All this and more – thanks for listening! We’d love to hear your thoughts. Leave us a voice mail at 281-241-QAQN(7276). Also, you can email us at feedback@qaqn.com.

Youuuu’ll nevvvver seee theeeeese linkssss coming:

Iron Man 3 gets its final trailer. Ben Kingsley sounds AWESOME.

The teens of Westeros Valley High are getting ready for prom night, which is dark and full of terrors.

Star Wars Episode VII is happening. Princess Leia may or may not be in it.

The Clone Wars is ending after five seasons.

Star Trek Into Darkness is almost here… still don’t know what it’s about. There’s a lot of running around and people falling from high places in the trailers. Not much actual info about the story. In other Star Trek news… tribbles. $&#&ing tribbles.

You should get to know Spotify.

Greg is a fan of Top Gear (UK) and Bang Goes the Theory. Now I’ve got some catching up to do. Of course, he still won’t watch The Walking Dead, so maybe I just won’t.

We leave you with this, the fourth entry in the Things That Make Me Laugh ‘Til I Cry list. BEES.

All the links that’s fit to print!

Greg’s whole family was sick, and Greg ALMOST DIED!

There’s been trace amounts of horse meat found in beef products in Europe. Yawn.

The Oscars happened. Some people were offended because they didn’t get the joke.

Then there’s these…

io9.com has some of the nicest commenters around. What is it about that site that elevates it above the worst of humanity, like you see in the comments sections of YouTube videos?

The Evernote/Moleskine mashup has been used, and Greg still ain’t sure about that whole thing.

The Crow remake/reboot might be happening and might be starring James McAvoy (Professor X in X-Men: First Class)

In which Daniel and Greg go LIVE once again… and mostly get it right. Also, the Super Bowl, defending the GoDaddy ad, Iron Man 3, Star Wars movie news and The West Wing.

All the news that’s fit to put in a bullet point list and call “show notes”:

Next week, live on Zap! we’ll be giving away a $25 gift card to Fanatics.com. Make sure you hit the QAQN homepage (or any page, really) at 12:30 pm Eastern on Tuesday, February 12.

Speaking of Fanatics – Wade Tonkin has been tapped to Emcee Affiliate Summit East 2013! Congratulations, Wade!

The Super Bowl happened. Boy, did it happen. The 49ers lost, and the Ravens… were also there.

GoDaddy put up a Super Bowl commercial that some are unironically calling the most offensive commercial they’ve ever run. It’s an ad featuring two fully clothed people kissing for half a minute. What’s offensive about that? Well, the guy is “ugly”, so there’s that. Oh, and some are saying he’s just a kid… well, he’s actually 34, and is playing the role of an engineer at GoDaddy, so even the character isn’t being portrayed as a kid.

Iron Man 3 had an ad during the Super Bowl. I was severely disappointed by the quality of it. Greg wasn’t as much.

It’s been announced that Star Wars will be releasing three films in six years starting in 2015: Episodes 7-9. There has been a rumor that there will be a number of standalone films released around the same time, or perhaps between the main Episodes. The first rumor is that one would feature Yoda. After recording the podcast today, it was confirmed that there will be two standalone movies and that one would feature a young Han solo and the other would be Boba Fett. Good timing, Disney. You couldn’t have told us before we started the show?

Lastly, in our Late to the Party segment, I’ve just started watching The West Wing. Brilliant show. I’ve got a few things to say about it, and I’d like to know what you think after you hear them!

Last night—or perhaps last year, depending on when you’re reading this—I had the supreme pleasure of appearing on a recent episode of Nick Seuberling’s START podcast to talk about podcast art. Nick and I met when were simultaneously guests on Ray Ortega’s Podcasters Roundtable not long ago, and when he (Nick, not Ray) read my NMX article about podcast art, he decided to invite me on his show to talk more about it!

We had a great conversation lasting almost an hour, and you’ll hear most of it in the edit (a section wherein I rambled a bit off-topic will be saved for another episode). There’s also video available of our Google Hangout session, which is super cool.

You should check out Nick’s stuff, it’s quite good!

A big thank you to all of our friends and colleagues who made Affiliate Summit such a great event! We had an awesome time despite both of us (and a lot of said friends and colleagues) getting sick. We’ll leave the show notes this time with a little food for thought from the excellent XKCD:

In which Daniel and Greg talk a lot about Las Vegas, a lot about Greg’s new public relations services, a little about the holidays, and a bit about Daniel’s atheism. Fun!

Affiliate Summit West 2013 is coming up in a few days, and Greg and I are getting ready for our annual trip to Las Vegas! In our opening segment, we cover hotels, gambling, hitting downtown Las Vegas, and how to get great deals using a Facebook game called MyVegas. The game’s fan group that I mentioned is the MyVegas Friends and Deals group.

Our second segment is Greg’s big announcement: the expansion of Greg Hoffman Consulting to include public relations services! While many OPMs shy away from being a full-service “everything to everyone” deal, Greg is going to embrace that philosophy and run with it. You will absolutely want to hear the details of this because it will be a boon to both merchants and affiliates alike.

We wrapped up with a segment about the holidays and how an atheist like me celebrates Christmas. We do, you know. If you’ve ever been curious about how a rational, sane atheist handles the holidays, listen in. I promise, I did my best not to alienate, upset, or taunt anyone. After that, we transitioned into a brief discussion of being rational and me being a big fan of logic and how I apply that to controversial issues like gun control. Oh yeah, we had some fun with this episode ;)

I was a guest on two great podcasts recently: Comic Book Fury and The Podcasters' Studio. Read about each, then go have a listen—I had a great time on both and I think you'll really enjoy them.

Besides the usual QAQN productions, I made appearances on two podcasts recently that I think you’ll enjoy.

I joined Tim Robinson and Jon Stump for the final episode of the year: 2012 Comics in Review. We covered a lot of ground—from DC to Marvel to Vertigo to Image and more. How did DC’s New 52 shape up in 2012? How is Marvel Now! doing? Looking at the state of the industry as a whole, will we still have printed comics (or any comics) by the end of the decade? We talked for nearly two hours about this stuff and had a lot of fun.

Podcast pro Ray Ortega asked me to guest on his fantastic The Podcasters’ Studio series to talk about the intersection of podcasting and affiliate marketing—two things that I’ve been doing for several years now. The upside to having two podcasters on a show like that, one with a deep topic, is that a lot of really great information comes out. The downside is that if we’re not careful, we’ll talk for hours. Ray edited it down to a tight hour-twenty, but we actually went a bit longer… and it was tough turning off the mics at the end.

After you’ve checked out the episode, shoot Ray a message on Twitter and tell him how awesome his site looks now after the redesign.

A guest post from FanDuel.com

With millions of people already seasoned veterans when it comes to fantasy sports, it might seem a bit daunting when it comes to trying to get involved for the very first time. Any competitive person though will strive to have a certain level of success, even in their first season of fantasy football, basketball, baseball or any other sport. Here’s some simple, yet essential tips to get the most out of your team when you prepare for a draft.

Learn From The Experts

Fantasy sports experts are seemingly everywhere, but the best ones are usually getting paid for the advice they give out. Sift through some of the preseason rankings to help formulate your own personal rankings for every single position that is drafted. This will save time and act as the main way to make picks when there is a time limit for each round.

Research Sleepers

In the first few rounds of a fantasy draft, the players even casual fans know are picked. However, in the later rounds, sleepers can actually make or break a team. Taking a waiver on a talented player who could breakout during the season late in a draft is a smart decision. If they do not pan out, there is probably someone on the waiver wire who can be picked up to fill the void.

Don’t Be Biased

Fantasy sports owners can’t be partial to their favorite players or teams if they want to have success. If you like the Philadelphia Eagles, that does not mean you should take Michael Vick in the first round. When you are debating between a few different players, favoritism can play a deciding role. That should be the only time though. For the most part, take the best talent available, even if they play on a team you dislike.

Understand The Rules

Sounds silly to say this, but fantasy sports are more complex than ever, so rules and settings are important. Each fantasy sports website now allows commissioners to customize their league’s scoring system. Take the time to review the rules, especially in fantasy football leagues. Options such as point-per-reception leagues, as well as head-to-head vs. total leagues can drastically alter a draft plan.

A note from QAQN:

FanDuel.com is an incredibly fun fantasy sports site. QAQN has an affiliate relationship with FanDuel, wherein certain links to FanDuel may generate a small commission or “finders fee”. This article does not contain an affiliate link, but FanDuel has graciously offered to enter me (Daniel) into a freeroll in exchange for posting it. Full disclosure and all that. That said—everything in the article is objectively great advice. Go check out FanDuel.com. It’s worth your time.

In which Daniel and Greg wonder WTF is up with mid-season finales, ponder 19 sci-fi movies that will change your life, and speculate about ghost violence.

We opened with some reflection on this year’s Black Friday/Cyber Monday shopping trends, and then launched into a fun discussion about my latest obsession: Doctor Who. Best show on television. Hands down.

WTF is up with mid-season finales? When did this start? Shows end in November and come back in the spring? Lame. Super lame. I thought it was an anomaly when Breaking Bad did it, now I learn (from The Walking Dead) that apparently it’s a ridiculous trend.

io9 posted a list of 19 movies that could change your life. How many have we seen? The answer may – but probably won’t – surprise you.

Rush will be performing here in Houston in less than a week, and I ordered all my concert swag online. Is that cheating? Talking about Rush led to Greg mentioning some new vinyl he got – Joan Jett and… the Pet Shop Boys? Sure, why not.

Have you seen the ghost girl hidden camera elevator prank that seems to be going around social media right now? It’s freaky… and pretty funny. I was reminded of my favorite hidden camera bit, from a show in Great Britain:

In which Daniel and Greg tackle the tough issues of the day. Obama. Romney. The Battle for Supremacy! THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE! Also, some minor news about Disney and LucasFilm and a contest for Affiliate Summit passes. Vote this episode for president!

We opened this show, recorded November 6th, 2012, with a bit about voting and elections. Don’t worry, we haven’t suddenly turned into a political show—we would just be a little bit derelict in our civic duty as Americans if we didn’t talk a bit about the election.

On a more fun note, Star Wars! Lucasfilm and all of it’s DBAs were bought by Disney. That’s Lucasfilm, LucasArts, ILM, Skywalker Sound, and everything associated with all of it. Episode VII is coming in 2015, and while we were initially skeptical it could be pulled off, we’re quite optimistic. In the show, I mentioned that I thought Harrison Ford would maybe not come back if asked, but after we finished recording, Greg found this.

The final segment is for the Affiliate Summit Newcomer Program. QAQN is giving away six passes to the upcoming Affiliate Summit West 2013, including one VIP pass (valued at $1,749)! Read all the details on the giveaway page, and help spread the word!

Five Networking+ passes are also up for grabs!

It’s that time of year again—time for a few awesome Affiliate Summit passes to be given to a few lucky winners. This time though, we’re doing it a little bit differently. You see, this time, I am in charge of the Summit Newcomer Program and I specifically asked for a VIP pass that I could give away in conjunction with that program. What does that mean?

If you are a first-time attendee of Affiliate Summit and you are willing to sign up and participate in the Newcomer Program, you are eligible to win the VIP pass!

If you are not a newcomer, or do not want to participate in the program, you may still win a Networking+ pass!

Why the distinction? Because the Newcomer Program is only open to holders of VIP (or All Access) passes. I want to promote the program. I want the winner of the super-awesome VIP pass to participate in the program. My pass, my rules :D

Here’s how this works. Below, you’ll see a contest widget from Rafflecopter.com (a great way to run contests on your site, FYI). In order to be eligible for a pass, you’ll need to leave a comment here on the site telling me why you’d like to attend Summit and what you hope to get out of the show should you be the winner. ALSO, you are required, if you want the VIP pass, to sign up for the program. If you’re just after a Networking+ pass, obviously you’ll skip that step.

You may earn entries for the giveaway by tweeting about the contest, mentioning it on Facebook, and other things as outlined in the widget.

I run fair contests. Each participant will be checked and double checked to ensure there’s no shenanigans going on.

If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. The contest ends December 7, 2012. The winners will be notified by December 10th.

See you in Las Vegas!

<a class="post_image_link" href="http://www.qaqn.com/zap/its-alive-alive-zap-184/" title="Permanent link to It’s Alive!

In which Greg welcomes Daniel back from the dead, and Daniel decides that social media is, indeed, BS. Plus, NaNoWriMo, Minecraft, Greg’s trip to Memphis and the Beatles re-released on vinyl.

So, I’ve been off social media for a couple of weeks now. Very little Facebook, almost no Twitter… it’s been awesome. I honestly don’t know that I’ll go back to the level of interaction that I’ve had with it previously. What led to this? It’s the subject of our first segment of the show.

The book referenced during that segment can be found at Amazon.com.

More information about NaNoWriMo can be found on their site.

Minecraft is a really fun game that stretches your creativity in interesting ways. Sandbox games tend to do that, and Minecraft does it especially well.

Greg went to Memphis, a trip that he says everyone should take once in their lives. Hey, if they wrote a song about it, it must be worth doing.

How old are you? Do you remember Pulsar: Man of Adventure?

The Beatles are being re-released on high-quality vinyl, and it’ll only set you back about $350! Whattabahgan!

From there, we got into another segment about the rise of digital music and the decline of physical media. I honestly can’t see myself buying another CD or DVD ever again. Probably Blu-Ray, too, but we’ll see.

Lastly… the Iron Man 3 trailer. Wow. Just… wow. This is going to be the Empire Strikes Back of the Iron Man franchise. This trailer is dark, dramatic, and somber. It’s going to be a hell of a movie.

Next week we’re giving away a VIP pass to Affiliate Summit West 2013—a $1,749 value! Stay tuned to QAQN, details will be posted on Tuesday, November 4th!

Also, skydiving and the epic jump from the edge of space. Throw this episode out of a perfectly good balloon.

There’s some good Marvel movie updates this week!

Thor

Iron Man 3 (looks like Iron Patriot will be in this one)

Ant-Man has a release date of November 6, 2015, six months after the Avengers 2, which is May 1st 2015.

And in Marvel TV news, Agent Phil Coulson is set to be the lead in the new S.H.I.E.L.D. series! Yes, they killed him off in The Avengers, but death isn’t the handicap it used to be.

Speaking of Marvel… Deadpool Gangnam Style. Seriously.

Direct way! RT @qaqn In a roundabout way, we have @robertliefeld to thank for this: youtu.be/xo-tWlETq8w

Did you watch Felix Baumgartner’s amazing near-space jump? Dude went up in a balloon and jumped out like a lunatic. He broke the speed of sound. Check out this dramatic re-creation.

Finally, in this week’s installment of ”Late to the Party” - Highlander! I sat down and watched this 1986, er… “classic”. It wasn’t terrible, merely a victim of being made in the 80′s. Greg told me I was “deep” in this segment because I compared it to Lethal Weapon, another movie that hasn’t aged gracefully. Apparently they’re doing a Highlander reboot with Ryan Reynolds. Could be interesting.

The UK premiere of Red Dwarf X took place last Thursday, and we found ways to watch it here in America. Don’t judge us. Space Corps Directive 3728/B clearly states you should watch Red Dwarf, so we’re sorta stuck. Here are some links to a few things we mentioned:

Trojan on YouTube

Trojan on Dave Catch-Up (good until Thursday, October 11)

The UK DVD/Blu-Ray plans

DVD Region encoding (which Greg thinks is something I made up, apparently)

We really want to hear from you listeners on this one—any Red Dwarf fans out there? We want to hear your thoughts! Leave us a voice mail at 281-241-QAQN(7276). Also, you can email us at feedback@qaqn.com.

In which Daniel and Greg talk about the state of radio and its impending doom, dubbing songs to avoid “bad” words, and the upcoming Red Dwarf X premiere. Listen to this episode while shakin’ your… glass.

It’s a music-centric show this time. We began by talking about how we listen to music while we’re working. What kind of music, how loud it can be, what kind of environment we have to be in. I mentioned that music with lyrics is distracting, Greg disagreed.

What kind of headphones or earbuds do you like? I mentioned the new Apple Earpods, which I think are great. Greg’s family goes through these things like crazy, and they just go with random, low-cost things that are easily replaced. I’ll probably do the same when my kids get older and start losing theirs.

Are we witnessing the slow death of radio? I kinda hope so. It would be a mercy killing at this point. We talked about radio edits of songs and how ridiculous it is to remove “ass” from Sweet Emotion and “crystal meth” from Semi-Charmed Life. Greg brought up the odd, yet hopeful, history of 99X in Atlanta.

For the final segment, we turned away from music. In this week’s “Late to the Party”, I come in with some thoughts about watching my first James Bond movie. Yep. Never seen one before. I sat down and watched Dr. No and was not exactly blown away. We talked about Bond for about 20 minutes, and included a bit about an article that Greg found titled “Why Men Bond with the 007 Theme“.

Are you a homeowner? Do you belong to a Homeowners Association? I’ve got a few things on my mind about those, and it’s a good thing my neighbors across the street don’t listen to this show.

The Avengers was released on DVD and Bluray, along with The Dark Knight Returns Part 1. This is not the recent Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises. This is an animated feature based on the seminal story by Frank Miller. A+. Best animated film that DC Comics has put out in a long time.

Also out this week, the new massively multiplayer game based on the Kung Fu Panda franchi—wait, it’s actually World of Warcraft? Well, that was awkward. We’ve both played WoW over the years and have a few things to say about the game.

Anyone still playing Second Life?

I tried to take my kids to see the space shuttle here in Houston. Two hours in the car—and we live, literally, about 10 miles away from the field—we just gave up.

Speaking of spacecraft (or attempted spacecraft anyway), a woman in New Zealand attempted to send her wedding ring into space after her divorce. It did not go well.

Greg tried the new candy corn flavored Oreo cookies. They were, apparently, sickeningly sweet. He only ate five.

Have you signed up for the Affiliate Summit Newcomer Program? Registration is open now! Listen in for the complete rundown, and I have more information about it right here on QAQN.

We debuted a new segment called Late to the Party. This is us getting caught up on cultural (geek cultural) items that we missed when they were popular. I’ve never seen an episode of Doctor Who. I watched three episodes, and submitted my report.

The show wrapped up with a bit about Red Dwarf. Greg watched the first three episodes of Series 5, which happens to be my favorite series. Awesome!

It’s that time of year again—my turn to organize the Affiliate Summit Newcomer Program! Now through December 30th, sign up to participate in the program at the Affiliate Summit website. Registration is open for newcomers who have never attended an Affiliate Summit before and for veteran volunteers who have been to at least one.

I sense some of you are wondering just what this all about. Some of you have never heard about the Newcomer Program or why it’s so great or why you should get involved. Fortunately, I can help with that.

With well over 5,000 people expected to attend Affiliate Summit West 2013 (January 13-15 in Las Vegas), folks who have never attended a show like this might feel intimidated or nervous. During the day, there are dozens of educational sessions. Nights, there are plenty of parties and networking events. What is a first-timer to do? And more importantly, what is a newcomer to wear?! That’s where we come in.

First-time attendees who join the Newcomer Program will be paired up with a veteran volunteer, someone who has experienced Summit and is willing to share some advice. The program is absolutely free to join for newcomers and veterans alike!

Sign up NOW!

Before the show, the newcomer and veteran will jump on the phone (or Skype) for a conversation of at least 15 minutes. The newcomer can ask whatever questions need to be asked—what to expect, what to wear, what parties are worth going to, and anything else that might need answering. The veteran can offer advice and knowledge, and everyone wins!

Sunday night, January 13th, is the Newcomer Meetup. This takes place at the conference hotel (Caesar’s) and everyone in the program is encouraged to attend. It’s an hour long and it’s an amazing opportunity for newcomers to mingle with people that have been in this industry for a long time. The sponsor of this meetup will be announced as the details are finalized, but we’re looking to have food and drink and all kinds of good stuff.

As a thank you, the newcomer is expected to treat the veteran volunteer to a meal—breakfast, lunch, dinner, whatever you two work out.

As a thank you from Affiliate Summit to the veteran volunteers, a link to a site of the vet’s choosing will appear on the Affiliate Summit website.

There are only a few rules about the program.

The Newcomer Program is open to both first-time attendees and veteran volunteers that hold a VIP pass or All Access pass. This will be strictly enforced.

This is not a business coaching or mentoring program. This is for people who have never attended Summit to learn more about Summit.

Questions? Contact me with any you might have!
Submit questions via Affiliate Summit (not via QAQN), here.
