Ru-dy! Ru-dy! Ru-dy! – Zap! #8/178

In which Daniel and Greg get into the newspaper business, printed media, bloggers vs. journalists, and Resident Evil. It’ll all make sense in the end.

We started this week with our main segment about newspapers and printed media. Is there still value to the newspaper? Greg is a newspaper guy going back more than a decade and has some insight. He’s worked in that business and he’s an internet guy, so he’s walked both sides. This segment was inspired by an article in the New York Times, In Defense of the Power of Paper. This led into a bit that seeks to answer the question: what’s the difference between a blogger and a journalist?

After the break we came back with some media goings-on.Resident Evil: Retribution opens this weekend, and I’m fairly excited for it. I’m a fan of the series.

Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger has been scheduled to keynote Affiliate Summit West 2013 – how awesome is that? Here’s a guy that had a movie made about him, a movie that went on to become a cultural touchstone for millions of people. Pretty exciting! (In between the recording and the posting of this episode, it was announced that the founder of Baby Einstein, Julie Clark, will be another keynote for the event. So we have a one named Daniel and another whose last name is Clark. FREAKY.)

A little light comics news as we talk a little bit about the possible movie adaptation of Y: The Last Man, and we wrapped up with a little bit about the iPhone 5.

All this and more – thanks for listening! We’d love to hear your thoughts. Leave us a voice mail at 281-241-QAQN(7276). Also, you can email us at

  1. Hey Guys, loved this week's podcast. It is funny how I can totally predict your responses and reactions to things as you go through the show. I guess that comes from years of doing such a fun show with you guys. The show on NBC that Greg is talking about is Grimm, a gritty show based on fairy tale monsters, a police procedural. The other show is called Once Upon a Time and that is on ABC and is amazing. Very Lost-Esque. I also wanted to say that I loved Y the Last Man and read all of it. I should go and re-read that too.

    1. Thanks Drew! I'm going to check those shows out. Angela and I just finished Game of Thrones (my second time through, her first), and we're looking for something new. I was thinking Walking Dead, and she liked the first episode well enough, but she hasn't exactly been begging for more.
